Hey y'all,

So I've noticed none of the threads talk about what Jerry does to accompany the chorus. In all the vids (Im watching the 12/31/79 version on YouTube) you see him do that walk up to the A, and then makes the A chord at the 5th fret, then playing the C#min chord at the 4th fret, then the D at the 5th fret etc. What is he doing? Is he just arpeggiating (I see him finger picking)? What is the arpeggiation figure? Thanks.

If I'm understanding your post correctly, maybe maybe not, think you're missing a couple key concepts. And I apologize if I'm misreading:
* Google CAGED guitar technique and understand how the chords move up and down the neck and respect to where the root is.
* Google some 101 of music theory and you'll learn that most chords are only 3 notes (1, 3 (or 3b) and 5) often simply called the triad.
* In a band setting with 4 instruments representing the chords it's quite common to play only the triad sometimes only a power chord (1 & 5) or double stop (any combination in any order of the chord)

So I'm guessing in Althea Jerry might have played the following for A, C#m and D
Code: Select all
E----------------------
B---5----5----7-------
G---6----6----7------
D---7----6----7------
A--------------------
E--------------------

Hi strummin, yeah I guess I wasn't phrasing my question correctly, I know the chord shapes he's playing, I know all the CAGED forms and the triads, I was just wondering what he's playing. Is he just strumming the chords, or is he picking individual notes?

Up until this point I've been strumming those chord shapes, wanted to know if there was anything I could to do to make it sound more like Jerry

He is usually only using the pick in this song when he is solo'ing, other wise he is fingerpicking.

Not to split hairs, but technically, I don't think there is a chorus in Althea? Just verses and a bridge, yes?
I'd agree. Each verse has an A part (Bm-A-E-A) and a B part (A-C#m-D), but since the lyrics in the B part are not repeated each time I wouldn't call it a chorus.
